Bharat Bandh live updates: Protest over SC/ST act amendment escalates; Trains halted, effigies burnt in Bihar, UP

Bharat Bandh LIVE UPDATES: Hundreds of people from the upper caste communities took to streets across the country today to protest against The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. In view of the ‘Bharat Bandh’ called by some upper caste groups against the amendment to the SC/ST Act on Thursday, the security has been beefed up in various states across the country. States like Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are worse affected. The protest has been called by 35 outfits. These organisation will protest against the recent amendment to the SC/ST Act. Why are people protesting? Earlier this year, the apex court had removed the strict provision of mandatory arrests under the Act. This decision had triggered nationwide protests by Scheduled Castes organisations, forcing the Centre to bring an amendment to the Act during the Monsoon Session to overrule the SC order. SEE PICS | Nationwide shutdown against SC/ST amendment act The Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Bill, 2018 was passed in Lok Sabha on August 6. The Congress party later alleged that the Centre has now passed the bill thinking about next year's Lok Sabha elections. Stay with us for Live Updates on Bharat Bandh Against SC/ST Act Amendment.
Bharat Bandh Against SC/ST Act Live Updates
11: 10 am: Petrol pumps to remain closed from 10 am to 4 pm today in Madhya Pradesh.

Bhopal: Petrol pumps to remain closed from 10am to 4pm today in view of #BharatBandh. #MadhyaPradesh pic.twitter.com/itRG23CgGb
— ANI (@ANI) September 6, 2018
11: 08 am: Shops in Lucknow (UP) and in Kota (Rajasthan) have been closed due to nation-wide bandh called against amendment to SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. 11: 06 am: Protests are underway in Alwar, Rajasthan.

#Rajasthan: Protests underway in Alwar against SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act amendment. #BharatBandh pic.twitter.com/YgWgHWeZLJ
— ANI (@ANI) September 6, 2018
11: 04 am: Bharat Bandh in Madhya Pradesh: Drones are being used for surveillance in Gwalior.
