Big Debate: Fuel costly, Rupee hits new record low, Is India towards development?

Indian Rupee on Thursday hit its record low of Rs 70.96 against the US dollar; as it fell by 22 paisa in the morning trade. On Thursday, it came to a close at fresh lifetime low of 70.74 against the dollar as it slid by 15 paisa.

As per reports, the fall came due to strong demand for the greenback from oil importers and surging crude oil prices stoking inflation fears.

The local unit dwindled down to hit a historic intra-day low of 70.90 in early trading - a level that was unthinkable only a few weeks ago.

However, sporadic intervention by the RBI at various levels limited further losses and triggered some recovery towards the close. At the same time, the bond yield curve also rose dramatically to 7.93 per cent.

Strong month-end demand for the US currency mainly from oil importers along with currency futures expiry related purchases predominantly weighed heavily on the forex market and haunted investor sentiment.

Growing fears about rising inflation in the midst of high global crude oil prices and consistent outflow of foreign funds from the domestic equity market also weighed down on the domestic currency.

Crude prices firmed up further on growing evidence of disruptions to supply from Iran and Venezuela and after a fall in US crude inventories.

Benchmark Brent crude oil was at USD 77.65 a barrel in early Asian trade.

Indore: In a shocking incident, Black money worth 18 crores have been seized by Lokayukta from a revenue department employee’s residence in Madhya Pradesh’s financial capital Indore. The incident came to light from Indore’s Sri Nagar area. The seizure was made by the Lokayukta after it conducted raids following a tip-off. The revenue department worker or Patvari; who is at one of the lowest positions in the office; usually earns Rs 18 lakh in a duration of 13 years; which comes down to around Rs 1,38,000 in an year. As per the officers who conducted raids; the Patvari had transfdered his entire property in the name of his maternal uncle; but the raids removed the lid off his black money and his relation with his uncle. The Lokayukta thereafter raided his uncle’s residence as well; post which revelation about properties and cash worth Rs 5 lakg were seized. The raids have created an anxiety among the revenue department officials; who were unaware of such ‘under- the- table’ earnings of their colleague.

2+2 Dialogue will help enhance engagement on security, diplomatic priorities: US

By Reena Bhardwaj

Washington DC [United States of America], Aug 31 (ANI): United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defense James Mattis will hold talks with their Indian counterparts Sushma Swaraj and Nirmala Sitharaman on September 6, in New Delhi. Officials in Washington have termed the upcoming dialogue a \'major opportunity\' to enhance the US engagement with India on critical diplomatic and security priorities.

On Thursday afternoon, a senior administration official said Secretary Pompeo\'s travel in tandem with Secretary Mattis is a strong indication of the deepening strategic partnership between the US and India, and of India\'s emergence as an important security provider in the region.

\"India\'s central role in our National Security Strategy is enshrined in the President\'s National Security Strategy as well as the administration\'s South Asia and Indo-Pacific strategies,\" the official told reporters during a conference call.

One of the main objectives of the upcoming dialogue will be to build on recent momentum in defense relations and gauge what might be done next. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the official added: \"We expect progress and further deepening of ties between our two militaries and creating a framework for greater information sharing and interoperability. We are also eager to expand defense trade, which is estimated to reach 18 billion by 2019 from essentially zero in 2008.\"

US President Donald Trump administration said the agenda at the dialogue will extend far and wide across the full gamut of defense issues. Still, to be sure, one of the key priorities will be concluding, or bringing close to the point of conclusion, several more foundational agreements that will facilitate US-India intelligence sharing. \"We also will use the 2+2 to further advance our expanding counterterrorism cooperation,\" the official further added.

The Iran sanctions issue will continue to be one of the enduring tension points in an otherwise sound relationship, a tight rope for leaders to walk during the 2+2 dialogue. When asked if the secondary sanctions on Iran would be a subject of discussion in New Delhi, the official added: \"We have been discussing regularly with India issues related to both Iran and CAATSA and are looking, as with other partners, to identify ways to cooperate to support our policy goals with regard to both those issues.\"

Experts expect that the 2+2 will see a faster pace of defense deals in the near term. The Trump administration has already made it abundantly clear that the two nations will discuss proposals to increase maritime domain awareness, defense innovation.

\"We are looking at potentially collaborating with some of our defense innovation efforts in the United States, our Defense Innovation Unit for example, and discuss proposals to enhance bilateral defense cooperation. So those would be just an example of some of the proposals that we are going to discuss at the meeting,\" the senior administration official added.

The senior official briefly touched on the economic relationship with India, and said that the economic relationship remains a key pillar of the India-US partnership.

\"The United States and India expanded bilateral trade by 12 billion last year, reaching 126 billion in 2017. We want to continue to grow the trade relationship to our mutual benefit, but to ensure the trade is fair and reciprocal. It is no surprise that tariff and non-tariff barriers have been the subject of longstanding concern, and the US Government is working with the Government of India to address market access challenges,\" added the official. Asian Games: Boxer Vikas settles for bronze after eye injury forces him to give walkover in semis

Jakarta: Indian boxer Vikas Krishan (75kg) settled for a bronze medal in the Asian Games after he was declared medically unfit to fight his semifinal bout due to a cut on his left eyelid sustained earlier in the event. The 26-year-old was to take on Kazakhstan's Amankul Abilkhan in his last-four clash this evening but has been forced out due to the injury. "There is inflammation in retina as well and it is too risky to let him fight. He will have to take a break for a few weeks," an official of the contingent told PTI. Vikas has, however, managed to script history by becoming the first Indian boxer to clinch three successive Asian Games medals. He won a lightweight 60kg category gold in Guangzhou 2010, before winning a middle-weight bronze in the 2014 edition in Incheon. The Haryana-boxer sustained the cut during his pre-quarterfinal bout and the injury aggravated during his gruelling quarterfinal clash against China's Tuoheta Erbieke Tanglatihan. The former world championships bronze-medallist, who won a gold at the Commonwealth Games earlier this year, overcame the bleeding to assure himself a medal.

This was India’s first medal in this event in more than 30 years.

Barman, on the other hand, became the first Indian to win an Asian Games gold in heptathlon, a feat he achieved despite competing with pain due to a toothache.

The Jalpaiguri girl was a pre-tournament favourite in the Heptathlon event. Barman had clinched the gold medal in the Asian Athletics Championship in 2017 in Bhubaneshwar. The Heptathlon event is a combination of seven track and field events – 100m, 200m, 800m, long jump, high jump, javelin throw and discus throw.

The 21-year-old Barman logged 6026 points from the seven events competed for two days. She needed a good run in the concluding event, in which she eventually finished fourth.

It was the same event after which she had collapsed during the Asian Athletics Championship last year in Bhubaneswar but despite finishing fourth today, she emerged a champion.

Another Indian in the fray, Purnima Hembram was 18 points behind Japan\'s Yuki Yamasaki, going into the 800m run, but she finished just ahead of Barman and overall fourth with 5837 points.

Qingling (5954) won the silver and Yamasaki the bronze medal with 5873points.

Before Barman, only Bengal\'s Soma Biswas and Karnataka\'s J J Shobha and Pramila Aiyappa had returned with a medal from the Asian Games.

Biswas and Shobha had finished two-three at both Busan Asian Games (2002) and the Doha Games (2006), while Pramila had won a bronze at the Guangzhou edition.

Case against me based on false statements, says activist Varavara Rao

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], Aug 30 (ANI): Varavara Rao, one of the activists who has been put under the house arrest in Hyderabad for having alleged links with Communist Party of India (Maoist) [CPI (Maoist)] in connection with the Bhima Koregaon violence, said on Thursday that the police has framed him in this case on the basis of false statements.

\"I am saying it from the beginning, that on basis of false statements, a case was filed against me. I have faith in the law,\" he said

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court directed the Pune police to keep the five accused activists --Rao, Arun Ferreira, Gautam Navlakha, Vernon Gonsalves and Sudha Bhardwaj--under house arrest till September 5. These activists are under police scanner for having links with Maoists and also being allegedly involved in triggering violence at Elgaar Parishad, an event to mark the 200th year of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon, in Pune that took place in January this year.

Speaking to ANI, Rao\'s lawyer Mihir Desai, said that these latest orders of house arrest for the arrested activists clearly show that the judicature is perturbed by the sudden act of authorities to imprison them.

An outrage grew over the detention of these activists after scores of leaders from various political outfits of the country said that it is an attempt to stifle dissent. Janata Dal (United) leader Pavan K Varma on Wednesday told ANI that if the Narendra Modi-led government failed to produce any evidence against the imprisoned activists then the current scenario will exude a reflection of Emergency.

Senior Congress leader, Salman Khurshid, also towed the same line and said that \'an atmosphere of imposing restrictions on dissent is growing in India\'. He also added that the many people who are raising their voices against the Centre are being suppressed. (ANI)

This story has not been edited. Reham Khan reveals Imran wanted her to enjoy 'being a politician's wife' and not talk about corruption

New Delhi: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s ex-wife Reham Khan has made yet another revelation about how living with Imran Khan was for her during the time they were married. Leveling fresh charges on her former husband, Reham a former BBC journalist, has said that Khan had limited her to being just a politician’s wife. She said that Imran wanted her to just be a politician’s wife who would just enjoy the privilege of being that. He would not allow her to broach up the topics of corruption happening around and would expect her to compliment him for being a great leader, she recently said. "He wanted me not to share information I had as a journalist of what was happening in the province where he was in power. He wanted me to enjoy the luxury life he is so used to. I could not do that. People would bring me evidence of corruption and complaints wherever I went but Imran would first ignore them, then fly into a rage about it,” she was quoted as saying by Firstpost. She said that she had grown quite attached to Khan and that is why despite differences in principles, it was difficult for her. She said it was impossible for her to overlook his lack of interest in governing. She alleged that he wanted a smiling wife who would happily travel with him to luxury hotels, in private jets or enjoy living quietly in his sprawling residence. “With time, I saw through him and as I confronted him over the rampant corruption and a 180-degree turn in the ideology of the PTI, our relationship went rapidly downhill. A wife was not needed anymore and I was used as a sacrificial goat instead,” she added while speaking to the portal.

India hopes new Pak govt \'will make South Asian region terror-free\'

New York [USA], Aug 30 (ANI): India on Thursday voiced its hope that the new government in Pakistan under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan \"will work to build South Asian region terror-free\" rather than indulging in polemics.

Speaking at UN Security Council, India\'s Permanent Representative to the UN, Syed Akbaruddin said, \"We hope the new government of Pakistan will, rather than indulging in polemics, work constructively to build a safe, stable, secure and developed the South Asian region, free of terror and violence.\"

While addressing the UN Security Council\'s open debate mediation and settlement of disputes confronting Pakistan\'s repeated references to the disputed territories, Akbaruddin said, \"We remind Pakistan, the one isolated delegation that made unwarranted references to an integral part of India, that pacific settlement requires pacific intent in thinking and Pacific content in action. Regurgitating a failed approach, which has long been rejected, is neither reflective of pacific intent nor a display of Pacific content.\"

On August 20, Pakistan\'s newly-appointed Foreign Affairs Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had claimed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan indicating the beginning of a dialogue between the two nations but later Pakistan denied making any such claim and blamed Indian media for misquoting Qureshi. Denying Qureshi\'s claim, sources in India had also emphasised that there was no fresh proposal for the resumption of dialogue between the two countries. Migraine three times more common in women: Study

Washington D.C. [USA], Aug 30 (ANI): According to a recent study, women bear a significant amount of the migraine burden due to the higher prevalence of estrogen and other sex hormones.

To decrease the substantial health and economic burden of a migraine on individuals and society, researchers at the Society for Women\'s Health Research addressed how the disease differs between women and men.

Migraine is three times more common in women than men, reaching peak prevalence between ages 30-39, at a time when many women are balancing work, family, and social obligations. Women are more likely to experience longer and more intense migraine attacks and report more migraine-associated symptoms and comorbid conditions.

For example, sex hormones like estrogen play a large role in the development of migraine and are likely contributors to observed sex differences in the disease.

In addition, women and men seek and receive treatment for migraine differently, with women more likely to consult a health care provider. This could be because women typically experience worse symptoms or because the feminization of the migraine makes men hesitant to seek help. Recognizing these gender differences can help overcome patient and provider bias in the diagnosis and treatment of migraine.

Despite the clear differences in migraine between women and men, research exploring these differences has been limited.

Innovation in migraine has been slow. Until earlier this year, no treatments designed specifically to prevent migraine had come onto the market in more than 50 years. To promote advancement in migraine research and patient care, the research identified gaps in knowledge and prioritizes areas that warrant further attention in order to improve health outcomes for both women and men. Priority areas include:

-Increasing awareness of migraine to better identify and treat the disease

-Enhancing quality-of-life measures by improving the assessment of disability and understanding of migraine\'s impact on workplace productivity

-Destigmatizing migraine to increase rates of those seeking and continuing care

-Expanding current animal models, including increasing use of female animals, to learn more about sex differences at the basic research level

The findings appeared in the Journal of Women\'s Health. Asian Games: Swapna Barman and Arpinder Singh clinch historic golds to take India's tally to 11

India matched its 2014 Asian Games gold tally after Arpinder Singh and Swapna Barman clinched gold medals in the men’s triple jump and women’s heptathlon events to make it 11 golds for India in the 18th the Asian Games in Jakarta. The 25-year-old Arpinder returned with his best effort of 16.77 metres in the final, which ensured him a yellow metal and it was after 48 long years that India bagged a gold in the event. En route the title, she won the high jump (1003 points) and javelin throw (872 points) events and finished second-best in the shot put (707 points) and long jump (865 points). Her weakest events were 100m (981 points, 5th position) and 200m in which she finished seventh with 790 points. Going into the 800m run, the last of the seven-event competition, Barman was leading China's Qingling Wang by 64 points. She needed a good run in the concluding event, in which she eventually finished fourth. It was the same event after which she had collapsed during the Asian Athletics Championship last year in Bhubaneswar but despite finishing fourth today, she emerged a champion. Another Indian in the fray, Purnima Hembram was 18 points behind Japan's Yuki Yamasaki, going into the 800m run, but she finished just ahead of Barman and overall fourth with 5837 points. Qingling (5954) won the silver and Yamasaki the bronze medal with 5873points. Before Barman, only Bengal's Soma Biswas and Karnataka's J J Shobha and Pramila Aiyappa had returned with a medal from the Asian Games. Biswas and Shobha had finished two-three at both Busan Asian Games (2002) and the Doha Games (2006), while Pramila had won a bronze at the Guangzhou edition.
