While the government’s figures indicate an improvement in the sex ratio at birth and child sex ratio in Tamil Nadu, anecdotal reporting of cases of suspicious infant deaths, well-established networks aiding sex-selective abortions, and the slow erosion of the official grassroots monitoring mechanism might send the State down this dark road yet again. Vigilance is of utmost necessity to restore gender balance in a State that was once notorious for female foeticide.
